CHAPTER 8

“Who are The Seven?” I asked as Fitore led us back to

his quarters overlooking the city.

“The Mallee have their oracle and priestesses. We have

The Seven,” he replied cryptically as we climbed the steep

stairs.

“They are psychics?” I probed further.

Fitore stepped aside as he reached the top. “That is one

aspect of who and what they are, but only one small aspect.

Combined, they are an elemental force with an understanding

of pure energy the likes of which this world has never seen,”

he said reverently.

Nodin tugged on my sleeve until I glanced down at him.

“I can hear them,” he said, his voice barely more than an

awestruck whisper. “That’s what I’ve been hearing since we

were in the car! I thought it was drums, but it’s not. It’s their

I perceived the presence of such a powerful group? Even

through the underlying white noise of the thriving Halati city

the resonance of The Seven should have pierced through the

smog of human consciousness.

Fitore walked to the far wall beyond his bed. There,

between a large wooden chest and bookcase, was a curtain

of heavy tan material that hung from an iron rod inches

below the curved rock ceiling. He pulled the panel aside and

gestured with his other hand. “This way.”

I stared briefly at the dark mouth of the tunnel, my chest

tightening at the prospect of the unknown lurking within.

There was no diplomatic option at this juncture that would

allow us to easily decline the invitation.

The tunnel was uncomfortably narrow, the walls cold

and slick with condensation. A few feet within, the energy

began to change, the air vibrating as if electrified before a

storm. To either side of the path a low greenish-white glow

began to emanate from a series of small round lights set at

equal intervals that extended as far as I could see.

“They know we’re here,” Nodin whispered behind me.

“Is that a good thing?” I asked him.

“Just follow the tunnel,” Fitore said from the rear. “After

the bend in the path ahead there is another chamber off to the

right.”
